Eve is known to be the first woman created by God; the wife of Adam, the original sinner, the docile woman, subservient to men- a symbol of femininity. However, the religious texts that tell of the story of Creation have been heavily censored throughout the years to fit the narrative of the ruling class. Several old texts in Judaism talk of a woman named Lilith, sometimes as a demoness who preys on newborn babies, but also, more infamously, as Adam's first wife, and technically, the real first woman.
Unlike Eve, she was made from the same dust Adam was created from, making her equal in all qualities to man. She was cast out of Eden when she wanted to play the more dominant role in bed, and became a demon. Eve was brought in to replace her, and Lilith was subsequently removed from popular texts.
I have attempted to retell the traditional story of Creation in the form of a poem accompanied with illustrations. Lilith represents an alternate narrative to a tale most people of the Christian, Jewish and Islamic faith grow up hearing.
